Stuart J. Nathan, Ph.D.

Founder | Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Nathan has practiced as a Licensed Psychologist in the Houston area for over 30 years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Psychology from Indiana University, a Master of Arts in Psychology from Loyola University Chicago and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University. His internship was completed at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas with a focus in Medical Psychology, working with patients suffering from cancer, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, strokes and kidney failure. After 6 years in a group practice, Dr. Nathan began his own practice working with an adult population focusing on adjustment issues related to multiple medical problems, providing neuropsychological assessments and pre-surgical evaluation for bariatric, pain management and fertility physicians. He continues to work in a traditional office setting and as a hospital consultant in medical/surgical and physical rehabilitation hospitals. Over the years his practice grew and in late 2021, he merged with the Recovery Ways Family of Programs. This transition was to further the mission of providing quality psychological services to the complex medical/rehabilitation patient in out-patient and hospital settings. Dr. Nathan provides Executive Level Consulting and is the Founding Partner and Executive Director of Stuart J. Nathan, Ph.D. and Associates.

Karen E. West, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist and Training Director

Dr. West has been Licensed as a Psychologist and practiced in Houston since 1996. She trained at the California School of Professional Psychology, receiving her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology with a Health Emphasis. She completed her internship at the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Her practice focus has been primarily in the field of stroke rehabilitation, assisting individuals coping with chronic medical conditions or in the midst of a health crises. Dr. West also provides pre-surgical assessments related to medical procedures, such as bariatric surgery, infertility treatments, and neurostimulator implants.  Implementing psychology interventions in Acute Rehabilitation Hospitals as well as Long Term Care facilities has been an emphasis of Dr.West’s practice.  She has provided clinical training, supervision and onboarded multiple psychotherapist and psychologists for the practice, to work most effectively with specific treatment goals.

Steven S. Callahan, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Callahan earned his Doctorate at Texas Tech University and has been practicing Psychology in Houston for over 35 years. He enjoys working with individuals, couples and families. Special areas of therapeutic focus include: anxiety disorders, depression, grief, couples counseling, dealing with disability, and chronic pain management. Dr. Callahan also provides psychological evaluations. Dr. Callahan works in various treatment settings, including out-patient and in-patient. Throughout his practice experience, Dr. Callahan’s theoretical orientation has been focused on cognitive-behavioral approaches to treatment.

Carlos Mazas, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Mazas earned his doctorate in clinical psychology with an emphasis on psychophysiology of the brain and decision-making at Indiana University, under the Richard Young Foundation Research Fellowship, in the Department of Psychological and Brain Science. He completed his internship at the VA San Antonio, focusing on psychological trauma, addictions, brain lesions, and neuropsychological measures among minorities. Caring, serving, understanding, and being there for veterans, impacted him when delivering psychological and neuropsychological interventions. Eliciting and affirming positive change among African Americans and Hispanics, helped Dr. Mazas understand the role of culture and social norms in human behaviors during his fellowship and faculty position at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He continues to treat patients with stroke, epilepsy, MS, trauma, addictions, cognitive impairments, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and other brain issues, among patients from all races and ethnicities, including Native Spanish speakers. Dr. Mazas’ approach to evaluation, assessment, and treatment are holistic and eclectic, using evidence-based techniques.

Renu Thomas, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Thomas is a Licensed Psychologist who completed her Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her pre-doctoral clinical internship at the Summit Psychological Associates in Akron, Ohio focused on outpatient forensic evaluation and treatment of individuals involved in the legal system. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Menninger Clinic. In November 2015, she became a Staff Psychologist at the Houston Methodist Behavioral Health, where she worked in the outpatient program doing psychological assessments and individual, couples and group counseling. She took a break from her career in 2018 to raise her children but remained active in her profession through public speaking commitments. In 2023, Dr. Thomas returned to her profession, this time in private practice, helping her patients in restoring connection and joy in their lives by developing curiosity and awareness of whatever is limiting their optimal functioning.

George Scott, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Scott is a provisionally licensed psychologist with experience in treating adults and geriatric clients in acute care, community mental health, and private practice settings. His clinical expertise is behavioral medicine, neuropsychological testing, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, grief, trauma, psychosis, neurocognitive disorders, and medically complex clients with co-occurring psychological disorders. Dr. Scott is certified in and implements Cognitive Therapy, Solution-Focused, DBT skills, and STAIR approaches. Dr. Scott is the Assistant Professor, as well as the Director of the BMRIO lab in the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at Sam Houston State University. As your therapist, you can expect him to meet you where you are, treat you graciously, and challenge you to become the best version of yourself.

Andrew Mercer, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Mercer earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Chicago and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Houston, with emphasis in Health Psychology. He completed a 1-year pre-doctoral clinical internship and subsequent 1-year postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System in San Antonio with emphasis in Primary Care Mental Health, and Behavioral Medicine, implementing evidence-based treatments with veterans to adjust to chronic and acute behavioral health problems. Prior to retraining in psychology, Dr. Mercer worked for over 15 years in various outpatient, telehealth, and residential mental health settings with an emphasis on delivering culturally informed approaches to common mental health problems, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychological assessment, behavioral medicine, and LGBTQ+ affirming care. Whether engaged in brief solution-focused therapy or ongoing psychotherapy, Dr. Mercer takes a compassionate yet directive approach.

Jonathon Flores, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

Mr. Flores is a Licensed professional counselor in the state of Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, completed a Masters in Psychology at the prestigious Bilkent University, and acquired a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Houston Christian University. He’s been actively involved in research ventures for over a decade. As Research Coordinator for the Developmental Behavior Genetics Lab at UT Austin. He participated in research focused upon genetics, hormones, and the expression of dangerous behavior in adolescents. As Research Affiliate with The Buss Lab for Evolutionary Psychology, he investigated behavioral mechanisms through an evolutionary lens. Jonathon engaged in cross-cultural research while living in Turkey and became the Head Graduate Research Investigator wherein his work explored facets of physical attraction and human mating behaviors. Jonathon was an elected board member for the Fort Bend Counseling Association. He’s provided counseling services to couples, families, adolescents, groups, and individuals. Clientele included victims of trauma, such as domestic violence or sexual assault. Therapeutic interventions were based in cognitive behavioral therapy.

Stephanie Claudio, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Stephanie Claudio has practiced as a social worker for over 6 years. She was born and primarily raised in Houston and enjoys working alongside the community she calls home. Mrs. Claudio earned her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Texas Arlington and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Palm Beach Atlantic University. She focuses on treating children, adolescents, young adults, and families using a multidisciplinary and holistic approach. Her approach includes using a strengths-based and individualistic model to best assess presenting problems and to align treatment plans to fit each client’s identified goals. To achieve this, Mrs. Claudio uses talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solutions-focused therapy, play therapy, behavior therapy, parent-child interaction therapy, and internal family systems with a trauma-informed lens. She has utilized these tools while working within the foster care and adoption system and in private practice. Her passion lies within the realm of learning how to navigate neurodiversity differences.

DaShana L. Hall, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Ms. Hall has practiced as a social worker for over 10 years in the Houston area. She earned her Master’s in Social Work from Alabama A&M University and a BSW from Miles College. She utilizes a holistic approach with sensitivity to multi-cultural issues. Her expertise includes motivational interviewing, screening, counseling, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse counseling, didactic speaking, 12-step programs for sobriety, dual diagnosis and mental health intervention with adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations. Ms. Hall works part-time at Texas Children’s Hospital where she provides focused patient/family counseling and psychosocial assessments. She utilizes her skills to conceptualize the psychosocial needs presented to intervene with patient/family behavior, coordinate community resources, and handle crisis/complex psychosocial situations.

Andrea Estrada, LPC

Licensed Professional Counselor

Ms. Estrada completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in counseling from the University of Houston. Ms. Estrada has over 10 years of experience in the mental health field. She began her career as a field clinician for a mobile crisis unit in the Houston area where she worked with a wide range of challenges including anxiety and depression, suicide prevention, homelessness, substance abuse, domestic violence, PTSD, grief, and psychosis. Her other clinical experience includes working with athletes and improving sports performance, in psychiatric hospitals across Texas, crisis intervention and field work, private practice, and shelters for unaccompanied minors and the homeless. She uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help adolescents and adults overcome unhealthy thinking and behaviors to live more balanced and fulfilled lives.

Sydney Gresham, Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Sydney Gresham, Psy.D. is a licensed clinical therapist with experience providing care to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults across medical, residential, and outpatient settings. She earned her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) and Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, an APA-accredited program, after completing her undergraduate studies in Psychology at Baylor University.
Dr. Gresham has trained in a wide range of clinical environments, including hospitals, assisted living facilities, forensic settings, and community clinics. She has provided psychotherapy and psychological evaluations for adults coping with complex medical and neurological conditions, including those recovering from trauma, cancer, stroke, and cognitive decline. During her doctoral internship at the Mental Health Center of Florida, she worked closely with physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation staff to support older adults in assisted living and memory care units, conducting therapy and evaluations while facilitating groups focused on grief and adjustment.
Her clinical expertise includes psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment, cognitive rehabilitation, and family support. Dr. Gresham brings a collaborative, patient-centered approach to interdisciplinary teams, focusing on resilience, adjustment, and quality of life for adults navigating recovery after serious illness or injury.

Deborah Theis, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Deborah Theis is a Board Certified Geropsychologist with over 25 years of specialized experience in the long-term care industry. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1995 and completed her internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
As a specialist in geriatric mental health, Dr. Theis provides comprehensive psychological services including diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic interventions for older adults. Her clinical expertise encompasses treatment for depression, anxiety, chronic pain management, dementia care, and addressing the psychological aspects of physical disability.
For the past year, Dr. Theis has expanded her practice to include telehealth services specifically designed for clients 65 and older. Throughout her career, she has also managed comprehensive psychiatric and psychological service programs for long-term care facilities, helping these organizations address complex behavioral health needs.
Dr. Theis is actively engaged in professional development and education, having developed and presented continuing education programs and training sessions at numerous state and national conferences. She currently serves as the President of Psychologists in Long Term Care, a national organization dedicated to improving mental health services for older adults in residential settings.

Jeff Adams, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Adams is a Texas licensed psychologist with extensive experience treating individuals with various medical conditions including mood disorders, chronic pain and acquired brain injuries. Dr. Adams received his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program at the University of Houston. He also completed a 2-year post-doctoral residency in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute for Clinical Neurosciences. Dr. Adams obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Nebraska and a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology from Florida State University. Within his clinical work, Dr. Adams enjoys completing comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, psychological evaluations and working as part of multidisciplinary treatment teams.

Robb Weiss, Psy.D., BCBA-D

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Robb Weiss, Psy.D., BCBA-D is a licensed psychologist in Texas with over 30 years of experience providing psychological care in medical, rehabilitation, and residential settings. He earned his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University, an APA-accredited program, and is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at the Doctoral level (BCBA-D).
Dr. Weiss has extensive experience treating adults with complex medical and neurological conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, cancer, and limb loss. He has served as Chief Psychologist at both the San Angelo State Supported Living Center in Texas and Central State Hospital in Georgia, where he oversaw interdisciplinary care for individuals with developmental, psychiatric, and neurological needs. Earlier in his career, he provided geropsychological services at Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, specializing in therapy and assessment for older adults facing chronic and debilitating illnesses.
His expertise includes individual and group therapy, diagnostic assessment, behavioral interventions, and family support. Throughout his career, Dr. Weiss has worked collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and therapists to promote resilience, adjustment, and improved quality of life for patients navigating recovery after serious medical events.

Carol Kimble, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Carol Kimble is a licensed psychologist in Texas with extensive experience supporting adults through the challenges that arise when physical and emotional health intersect. She has worked with individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, chronic pain, and medical conditions, helping them build resilience and achieve meaningful goals.

Before joining Strive, Dr. Kimble provided care in outpatient, inpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care settings, as well as leadership in clinical training, quality oversight, and behavioral health integration. Her background also includes disaster mental health work with the American Red Cross, where she provided crisis intervention and support during both local and national emergencies.

Dr. Kimble earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also holds an MBA from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.

Cathy Binstock, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Ms. Binstock graduated with a Masters of Social Work from The University of Houston. She has 25 years of experience providing individual, couples, and family therapy. Her special areas of interest include issues related to anxiety and depression, coping with life transitions, loss and grief, chronic illness and disabilities. She is an author of “After Your Child’s Diagnosis A Practical Guide for Raising Children With Special Needs” and the founder of River Performing and visual arts center; an arts education center for children with special needs and chronic illnesses.

Charli Washington, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Charli Washington is a licensed psychologist specializing in evidence-based interventions for individuals coping with medical, psychological, and trauma-related challenges. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Houston, where she also served as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences. She holds a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Spanish from Spelman College, graduating magna cum laude.

Dr. Washington completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, where she provided individual and group therapy for adults experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and trauma-related disorders. She later completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital, focusing on psychotherapy for healthcare professionals and program development for stress management and resilience enhancement.

Throughout her clinical training, Dr. Washington has worked in diverse healthcare and community settings, including the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, the Trauma and Resilience Center, and community-based programs addressing substance use and mental health disparities. Her clinical approach integrates cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and trauma-focused modalities to promote emotional recovery and adaptive functioning.

Samoan Johnson Robinson, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Samoan Johnson Robinson, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with extensive experience providing psychological care in hospital and acute inpatient rehabilitation settings. She earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston, an APA-accredited program, and completed both her predoctoral internship and postdoctoral training within hospital-based systems.
Dr. Robinson brings more than two decades of experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary medical teams in complex care environments, including long-standing appointments at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and UT–Harris County Psychiatric Center. Her clinical work has included psychological assessment, short-term therapeutic intervention, and consultation with patients coping with serious medical, neurological, and psychiatric conditions.
In her role at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Houston at The Medical Center, Dr. Robinson helps patients address adjustment to illness or injury, supporting them in managing pain, anxiety, emotional distress, and the psychological challenges that can arise throughout the rehabilitation and recovery process. Her approach emphasizes resilience, coping skills, and engagement in care to promote optimal functional and emotional outcomes.
Dr. Robinson is committed to integrated, patient-centered care and works closely with physicians, nurses, and rehabilitation professionals to ensure comprehensive support that addresses both psychological well-being and recovery goals.

Jeremy Jabbour, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Jeremy Jabbour, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist with a background in integrating evidence-based cognitive behavioral practices with humanistic principles to support patients in medical and rehabilitation settings. He earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University.
Dr. Jabbour completed his predoctoral internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he provided psychological services across inpatient and outpatient settings for individuals living with chronic serious mental illness as well as those experiencing acute psychiatric crises. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and Ben Taub Hospital, with advanced training in consultation-liaison psychology, behavioral medicine, and adjustment to complex medical challenges.
His clinical approach emphasizes functional improvement, emotional resilience, and meaning-making, using a flexible application of cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and humanistic frameworks. Dr. Jabbour works collaboratively with multidisciplinary care teams to help patients manage anxiety, emotional distress, pain-related concerns, and adjustment to illness or injury throughout the rehabilitation process.
In his role with Strive Rehabilitation, Dr. Jabbour provides psychological services at HCA Houston Southeast, HCA Houston Northwest, and HCA Houston West, supporting integrated, patient-centered care within hospital rehabilitation environments.

Niloofar Tavakoli, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Niloofar Tavakoli, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with specialized training in health psychology and integrated medical care. She earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston, an APA-accredited program, with an emphasis in Health Psychology. Dr. Tavakoli completed her predoctoral internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where she provided trauma-informed, evidence-based psychological services within primary care, specialty medical clinics, and interdisciplinary hospital teams. Her training includes consultation-liaison psychology, behavioral medicine, pain management, behavioral sleep medicine, and treatment of co-occurring medical and mental health conditions.

In her role at HCA Houston West, Dr. Tavakoli supports patients as they adjust to illness or injury, helping them manage pain, anxiety, emotional distress, and health-related behavior change throughout the rehabilitation and recovery process. Her clinical approach integrates cognitive-behavioral and acceptance-based therapies, with an emphasis on resilience, values-based living, and whole-person care.

Dr. Tavakoli is committed to patient-centered, culturally responsive care and works collaboratively with physicians, nurses, therapists, and rehabilitation teams to promote emotional well-being and engagement in treatment during medical recovery.

Phylette Willis, Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Phylette Mitchell Willis has practiced as a Licensed Psychologist in Texas for nearly two decades, providing psychological services throughout the Houston and Galveston areas with a strong emphasis on adult and geriatric populations in nursing home and long-term care settings. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College, a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston–Clear Lake, and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

She completed her postdoctoral training with Deer Oaks, where she focused on geriatric care in nursing home environments, conducting individual and family therapy, psychological evaluations, and staff consultations. Over the course of her career, Dr. Willis has provided psychotherapy, behavioral consultation, and psychological assessment for medically vulnerable adults, facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration with facility staff, and delivered in-service trainings to support comprehensive resident care. In addition to her clinical work, she has served in leadership roles including Clinical Director and Interim Executive Director at the Family Service Center of Galveston County, overseeing clinical programs and ensuring quality mental health services across community-based settings.

Dr. Willis continues to provide therapy, consultation, and psychological evaluation services within long-term care environments as part of the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team.

Soha Gonzalez, Psy.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Soha Heidari Gonzalez has practiced as a Licensed Psychologist in California and Texas for over a decade, providing trauma-informed care, psychological assessment, and family systems intervention across clinical and community settings. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, magna cum laude, from Vanguard University, followed by a Master of Psychology and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and completed her APA-accredited doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Western Youth Services in California.

Early in her career, Dr. Gonzalez worked in community mental health and outpatient settings, providing psychotherapy, supervising clinicians, and supporting program implementation and documentation compliance. She later co-founded and served as Clinical Director of Free Again Consulting, where she provided clinical oversight, psychological assessment, program development, and leadership consultation while maintaining an active therapy caseload.

Her clinical work now focuses exclusively on adults, with particular attention to complex trauma, grief, adjustment to medical conditions, and life transitions, including the unique psychological needs of geriatric populations. She integrates evidence-based modalities with culturally responsive approaches and has advanced training in trauma treatment, grief counseling, dialectical behavior therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, and VA disability evaluations. Dr. Gonzalez continues to provide psychotherapy, assessment, and consultation within interdisciplinary healthcare environments.

Dr. West has been Licensed as a Psychologist and practiced in Houston since 1996. Dr. West also provides pre-surgical assessments related to medical procedures, such as bariatric surgery, infertility treatments, and neurostimulator implants.  Implementing psychology interventions in Acute Rehabilitation Hospitals as well as Long Term Care facilities has been an emphasis of Dr.West’s practice.  She has provided clinical training, supervision and onboarded multiple psychotherapist and psychologists for the practice, to work most effectively with specific treatment goals.

Andrew Mercer, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Mercer earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola University Chicago and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Houston, with emphasis in Health Psychology. He completed a 1-year pre-doctoral clinical internship and subsequent 1-year postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the South Texas Veterans Healthcare System in San Antonio with emphasis in Primary Care Mental Health, and Behavioral Medicine, implementing evidence-based treatments with veterans to adjust to chronic and acute behavioral health problems. Prior to retraining in psychology, Dr. Mercer worked for over 15 years in various outpatient, telehealth, and residential mental health settings with an emphasis on delivering culturally informed approaches to common mental health problems, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychological assessment, behavioral medicine, and LGBTQ+ affirming care. Whether engaged in brief solution-focused therapy or ongoing psychotherapy, Dr. Mercer takes a compassionate yet directive approach.

Carol Kimble, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Carol Kimble is a licensed psychologist in Texas with extensive experience supporting adults through the challenges that arise when physical and emotional health intersect. She has worked with individuals facing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, chronic pain, and medical conditions, helping them build resilience and achieve meaningful goals.

Before joining Strive, Dr. Kimble provided care in outpatient, inpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care settings, as well as leadership in clinical training, quality oversight, and behavioral health integration. Her background also includes disaster mental health work with the American Red Cross, where she provided crisis intervention and support during both local and national emergencies.

Dr. Kimble earned her Ph.D. and M.S. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. She also holds an MBA from Virginia Tech and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.

Charli Washington, Ph.D.

Dr. Charli Washington is a licensed psychologist specializing in evidence-based interventions for individuals coping with medical, psychological, and trauma-related challenges. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Houston, where she also served as a research and teaching assistant in the Department of Psychological, Health, and Learning Sciences. She holds a B.A. in Economics with a minor in Spanish from Spelman College, graduating magna cum laude.

Dr. Washington completed her pre-doctoral internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center, where she provided individual and group therapy for adults experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms and trauma-related disorders. She later completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Houston Methodist Hospital, focusing on psychotherapy for healthcare professionals and program development for stress management and resilience enhancement.

Throughout her clinical training, Dr. Washington has worked in diverse healthcare and community settings, including the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, the Trauma and Resilience Center, and community-based programs addressing substance use and mental health disparities. Her clinical approach integrates cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and trauma-focused modalities to promote emotional recovery and adaptive functioning.

Dr. Washington is passionate about helping individuals navigate adjustment to illness, trauma recovery, and life transitions. She brings a warm, collaborative approach that emphasizes empowerment, resilience, and holistic wellness.

Deborah Theis, Ph.D.

Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Deborah Theis is a Board Certified Geropsychologist with over 25 years of specialized experience in the long-term care industry. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas A&M University in 1995 and completed her internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas.
As a specialist in geriatric mental health, Dr. Theis provides comprehensive psychological services including diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic interventions for older adults. Her clinical expertise encompasses treatment for depression, anxiety, chronic pain management, dementia care, and addressing the psychological aspects of physical disability.
For the past year, Dr. Theis has expanded her practice to include telehealth services specifically designed for clients 65 and older. Throughout her career, she has also managed comprehensive psychiatric and psychological service programs for long-term care facilities, helping these organizations address complex behavioral health needs.
Dr. Theis is actively engaged in professional development and education, having developed and presented continuing education programs and training sessions at numerous state and national conferences. She currently serves as the President of Psychologists in Long Term Care, a national organization dedicated to improving mental health services for older adults in residential settings.

Jeff Adams, Ph.D.

Dr. Adams is a Texas licensed psychologist with extensive experience treating individuals with various medical conditions including mood disorders, chronic pain and acquired brain injuries. Dr. Adams received his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) from the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program at the University of Houston. He also completed a 2-year post-doctoral residency in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Institute for Clinical Neurosciences. Dr. Adams obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Nebraska and a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology from Florida State University. Within his clinical work, Dr. Adams enjoys completing comprehensive neuropsychological assessments, psychological evaluations and working as part of multidisciplinary treatment teams.

Jeremy Jabbour, Ph.D.

Dr. Jeremy Jabbour, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist with a background in integrating evidence-based cognitive behavioral practices with humanistic principles to support patients in medical and rehabilitation settings. He earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University.
Dr. Jabbour completed his predoctoral internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where he provided psychological services across inpatient and outpatient settings for individuals living with chronic serious mental illness as well as those experiencing acute psychiatric crises. He subsequently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine and Ben Taub Hospital, with advanced training in consultation-liaison psychology, behavioral medicine, and adjustment to complex medical challenges.
His clinical approach emphasizes functional improvement, emotional resilience, and meaning-making, using a flexible application of cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and humanistic frameworks. Dr. Jabbour works collaboratively with multidisciplinary care teams to help patients manage anxiety, emotional distress, pain-related concerns, and adjustment to illness or injury throughout the rehabilitation process.
In his role with Strive Rehabilitation, Dr. Jabbour provides psychological services at HCA Houston Southeast, HCA Houston Northwest, and HCA Houston West, supporting integrated, patient-centered care within hospital rehabilitation environments.

Niloofar Tavakoli, Ph.D.

Dr. Niloofar Tavakoli, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist with specialized training in health psychology and integrated medical care. She earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston, an APA-accredited program, with an emphasis in Health Psychology. Dr. Tavakoli completed her predoctoral internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where she provided trauma-informed, evidence-based psychological services within primary care, specialty medical clinics, and interdisciplinary hospital teams. Her training includes consultation-liaison psychology, behavioral medicine, pain management, behavioral sleep medicine, and treatment of co-occurring medical and mental health conditions.

In her role at HCA Houston West, Dr. Tavakoli supports patients as they adjust to illness or injury, helping them manage pain, anxiety, emotional distress, and health-related behavior change throughout the rehabilitation and recovery process. Renu Thomas, Ph.D.

Dr. Thomas is a Licensed Psychologist who completed her Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her pre-doctoral clinical internship at the Summit Psychological Associates in Akron, Ohio focused on outpatient forensic evaluation and treatment of individuals involved in the legal system. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Menninger Clinic. In November 2015, she became a Staff Psychologist at the Houston Methodist Behavioral Health, where she worked in the outpatient program doing psychological assessments and individual, couples and group counseling. She took a break from her career in 2018 to raise her children but remained active in her profession through public speaking commitments. In 2023, Dr. Thomas returned to her profession, this time in private practice, helping her patients in restoring connection and joy in their lives by developing curiosity and awareness of whatever is limiting their optimal functioning.

Samoan Johnson Robinson, Ph.D.

Dr. Robinson brings more than two decades of experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary medical teams in complex care environments, including long-standing appointments at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and UT–Harris County Psychiatric Center. Her clinical work has included psychological assessment, short-term therapeutic intervention, and consultation with patients coping with serious medical, neurological, and psychiatric conditions.
In her role at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Houston at The Medical Center, Dr. Robinson helps patients address adjustment to illness or injury, supporting them in managing pain, anxiety, emotional distress, and the psychological challenges that can arise throughout the rehabilitation and recovery process. Phylette Willis, Psy.D.

Dr. Phylette Mitchell Willis has practiced as a Licensed Psychologist in Texas for nearly two decades, providing psychological services throughout the Houston and Galveston areas with a strong emphasis on adult and geriatric populations in nursing home and long-term care settings. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Spelman College, a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston–Clear Lake, and a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Clinical Psychology from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

She completed her postdoctoral training with Deer Oaks, where she focused on geriatric care in nursing home environments, conducting individual and family therapy, psychological evaluations, and staff consultations. Over the course of her career, Dr. Willis has provided psychotherapy, behavioral consultation, and psychological assessment for medically vulnerable adults, facilitated interdisciplinary collaboration with facility staff, and delivered in-service trainings to support comprehensive resident care. He earned his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University, an APA-accredited program, and is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst at the Doctoral level (BCBA-D).
Dr. Weiss has extensive experience treating adults with complex medical and neurological conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, cancer, and limb loss. He has served as Chief Psychologist at both the San Angelo State Supported Living Center in Texas and Central State Hospital in Georgia, where he oversaw interdisciplinary care for individuals with developmental, psychiatric, and neurological needs. Earlier in his career, he provided geropsychological services at Lakeshore Mental Health Institute, specializing in therapy and assessment for older adults facing chronic and debilitating illnesses.

Early in her career, Dr. Gonzalez worked in community mental health and outpatient settings, providing psychotherapy, supervising clinicians, and supporting program implementation and documentation compliance. She later co-founded and served as Clinical Director of Free Again Consulting, where she provided clinical oversight, psychological assessment, program development, and leadership consultation while maintaining an active therapy caseload.
